Adventures of Yesterday
Yesterday, we visited...
1) THE COLOSSEUM AND THE ROMAN FORUM. Apparently the Colosseum is actually called the Flavian Ampitheater (who knew? Our teacher Lisa Schultz recommend we call it that, and then feel very good about ourselves when no one else knows what we're talking about). It was one of my favorite parts so far to visit. Pictures will do most of the talking -- I will post ASAP! It was really interesting to learn that all the brick ruins we are seeing are actually just the skeletons of the actual buildings; everything would have been covered completely in marble stucco. But even the white marble buildings of our imaginations is wrong! Everything would have been colorfully painted, and extremely true to life. For example, the gaping, pupil-less eyes we see on all the statues would have been exquisitely painted.
2) No hot water! :( :( :( Our apartment is definitely the crappiest, but I still love it! It means I get to walk around and enjoy the city at night -- and visit all of my nice Rome-mates' apartments to shower there! Definitely one of the best showers of my life was the warm one I bummed off of Kristin, Melissa, Sarah, and Catherine (thanks guys!) -- UPDATE WE HAVE HOT WATER NOW!
3) Our readings for the class classes are loooong but very interesting. These are the readings for our actual class-classes today (not just sightseeing and adventuring as Lisa's art history seems to be); today we are visiting the Joe Nafuma Refugee center with Kathie, and then coming back to the Rome Center for class with Resat. I am not entirely sure what these classes entail, but I know my final project for Kathie's class is going to be writing a 3 act play with Rebecca and Maggie! Woo hoo, artsy afternoons writing at the cafe, here I come! - UP
4) Miss you!

Glad you aren't stinky anymore - keep those showers coming! Hard to imagine the Roman ruins being all painted - seems like that would make them a bit tacky? :) What great fun! Love, Dad
ReplyDeleteLove your pictures! Especially the awkward ones. Glad you're having fun.
